Hair-raising stunt to encourage children to ride safely

Children are being encouraged to find out more about cycling safety with an exciting stunt show at their school.

Pupils at primary schools in Airedale will have the opportunity to get their bikes safety checked by an expert team, as well as learning about the importance of wearing a helmet and leading a healthy lifestyle during a series of cycling safety days.

Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust (tPCT) is backing the Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative (NRSI) to bring the workshops to local schools. Other schools involved in Airedale are Holycroft primary school, Victoria primary school and Eastwood primary school. All these schools will be having their safety day during the week of 21 May.

This is one of many initiatives that the NRSI have teamed up with the tPCT to deliver. Others include cycle clubs, road cycling and providing road safety resources.

The days are put on by RJ Ride Guide, a company which provide a professional mountain bike instructor to teach the children road safety and will also be putting on an extreme mountain bike stunt show. The stunt show will help to encourage a further interest in sports and in leading an active, healthy lifestyle.

Hannah Lindsey Physical Activity Team Co-ordinator for Bradford and Airedale Teaching PCT said:

“We are supporting this project as it promotes positive messages to reduce the number of accidents across the district and the importance of having an active lifestyle. It is also an opportunity for schools to access on-road cycling training and access to cycle clubs.

“We try to encourage children to be active, so it becomes part of their routine and stays part of their lifestyle.”

Paul Grundy, Head Teacher at Worth Valley primary school said:

“Cycling is a very popular at our school - we have a Saturday morning cycle club and a 500m track. We use bikes in PE lessons and organise parent and child bike rides.

“Teaching the children more about safe cycling is crucial to us and we are looking forward to the excitement of the demonstration and the opportunity for children to bring their bikes to have them checked by experts.

“The mountain bike show will be great to motivate the children further in being active and will be really exciting for them.”
